No other Austrian city has changed as dramatically as Linz has in recent decades. Firstly, it was a nice inconspicuous trade village astride the Danube, then the home town of Adolf Hitler, then an industrial city together with burdens and threats resulting from it. Today Linz is a modern space of life with numerous economic successes. The city never sleeps but searches for new challenges – it is a City of Change. The fact of being European Capital of Culture 2009 is the element of transition process for Linz, both as a project aiming at permanent urban development as well as an impulse and new energy for dynamic process of transition.

Through a number of projects Linz09 presents different stories about the city: Linz Welcome, Linz Capital, Linz Power, Linz Travel, Linz World, Linz Memory, Linz Knowledge, Linz Pleasure, Linz Holiday and Linz Dream. Past, present and future are presented by different combinations of the above-mentioned elements. Europe and the world, which are two additional programme points, enable the audience to experience the true openness of the city.
